The Sweet Service Award goes to the Twelve Apostles Hotel, for their Tea by the Sea service recovery. Whilst I had not complained about a previous experience of it, and had only mentioned it to the PR agency, GM Horst Frehse called immediately, and requested an opportunity to rectify it, suggesting that I return with my friends on my birthday earlier this week. Not only had the Tea by the Sea changed into a generous buffet offering, but Pierre Jourdan Belle Rose was waiting for us on ice, the table was strewn with rose petals, and we received VIP service and treatment. The cherry on top was that Chef Henrico Grobbelaar presented me with a massive birthday cake with the Whale Cottage Portfolio logo!
The Sour Service Award goes to Asara Estate, and its GM Pete Gottgens. I attended the Pure Food Market last Friday, a nice idea on a perfect summer’s day, but with a shortage of parking, and a shortage of waiters to take orders for coffees (the waiter-dressed staff had been rented for the day to only clear tables). Gottgens looked more like a security man than the hotel GM, and came to my car when I hooted at an elderly couple indulgently blocking all traffic into and out of the wine estate. He tried to poke the antenna of his walkie-talkie into my face, tried to break off my car side mirror, blocked my exit by instructing his security man to stand in front of my car, and finally tried to strangle me by pulling the safety belt which I had on.
POSTSCRIPT: 5/7: We have received feedback from another local that he too received the violent treatment from GM Pete Gottgens. This article from a Scottish newspaper details the problems he left behind before returning to the Cape.
