Did you find what you wanted?

The space that once was Gesellig on Sea Point’s Regent Road had been standing unused for a couple of months. Now it is the home of Flatteur Café, a ‘specialty coffee shop’, according to its co-owner John du Preez, and is worthy of its name, meaning flattery in French, or so I thought on my first visit. Unfortunately the second visit a few days later was disappointing.
John told me that they do not want to become a restaurant but that they want to focus on being a good coffee shop. They use Origin coffee and its Nigiro teas, and I enjoyed a perfectly made dry cappuccino (R20), even though they only have ‘Flat White‘ on their coffee list, yet they were happy to oblige. The menu is short and sweet, and will change every two to three weeks. They offer a number of different coffee styles, two or three cakes daily, baked by John’s Polish partner Rafal Glenc, as well as muffins (R12), scones with jam and cream (two for R20), Danish custard slices, and a range of unusual sounding biscuits, including ginger, coconut and sultans, butternut, as well as muesli rusks.
Breakfast is served all day, a choice of scrambled
eggs served with salmon and rye bread, a steal at R45, or served with mushrooms (R35); muesli, honey and yoghurt (R25); and French Toast served savory with Brie and tomato jam, or sweet,
with fresh fruit and mascarpone. On Friday I enjoyed the corn fritters with bacon and cherry tomatoes (R45). Sandwiches are available too, on a choice of rye bread, ciabatta, and toasted croissant and cost between R45 - R55, including steak and parmesan, poached chicken breast marinated with red peppers and tapenade, and mushroom served with salsa verde and Dijon mustard. Salads cost R45, and are a grilled Caprese, Lentil salad, and a warm winter salad with roast vegetables and couscous. A Special of the day on both days was a Feta, tomato and rocket omelette (R35). Chef Catherine is friendly, having moved to the city after selling her Bamboo Beach restaurant in Sandbaai, outside Hermanus. All the staff smiled, and were welcoming on the first visit.
John and Rafal lived in London for twenty years. It was John who wanted to return to his home country (he grew up in Mossel Bay), and they chose Sea Point to set up their new business, not ever having run such a business before. Rafal is a passionate baker, baking the French chocolate cake (R30), Lemon Meringue (R28), and Cappucino Cake (R40), the latter being so popular that it is sold out on most days. They did not know predecessor
Gesellig, and have smartened up the interior, with a reed ceiling, finished off the deck onto the Church Street pavement, added new wood dominant furniture on the upper level, used ‘blikborde’ decoratively on one of the walls, used wood cladding on the kitchen counter, and created a new cake and coffee counter. A large poster gives a French feel, as does the French café music. Each table has a ‘blikbeker’ holding the sugar sticks, to continue the theme. Cutlery is by Fortis. Books are displayed on the steps of the spiral staircase.
Flatteur Café is a friendly homely coffee shop serving excellent food at very reasonable prices. I wrote all the above (other than the menu details) after my first visit. When I went back on Friday it was as if the personality of Flatteur Café had changed completely. From friendly and welcoming on my first visit it was as if they did not care, with no menu brought to the table, nor order taken. The friendly chef also wasn’t on duty, and I was horrified to see her assistant spraying a pan with what seemed half a canful of Spray & Cook. John seemed completely disinterested, working on his laptop, not checking on his two tables with customers, while the barista/waiter had his back to the coffee shop and was sharing photographs on his phone with the assistant cook, and ignoring his customers too. I had asked John
for the menu to be e-mailed, to save me writing it all down, but it never arrived, despite a follow up call. A lovely fellow guest Jadee, who follows the Restaurant Specials on our blog, was on her first visit on Friday, but had arrived earlier. She fed back that a strange atmosphere was tangible whilst the chef had been there earlier in the morning. It is disconcerting that Flatteur Café could have such a personality change in its first two weeks of operation.
Flatteur Café has fantastic potential, especially in Sea Point, which is short of quality restaurants and coffee shops. One hopes that John will come out of his shell, and connect with his customers more, to make them feel welcome when they support his establishment. Rafal and Chef Catherine add value with their special food, and the interior is attractive. Parking in the area is scarce.

Before the new working year kicks in tomorrow, when most return to work, we have taken stock of our blog. Last year we had just over 401000 unique pageviews, and the winter Restaurant Specials blogpost was by far the most popular. Most traffic came via Google searches, and interestingly Facebook generated three times the volume of traffic to the blog compared to Twitter. More than 2000 subscribers receive the latest blogpost daily on RSS feed subscription.
We cannot always predict what drives traffic to the blog. The three best read Blog days, with over 2800 unique pageviews each, were 11 January (Cruise liners mean ‘The World’ to the V&A Waterfront: Cape cruise crisis), 23 April (Chef Bruce Robertson returns to Cape Town, plain sailing at The Boat House), and 9 November (Spier Sweet Service and City of Cape Town Sour Service Awards). Interesting is that the blogpost we wrote on 18 April in 2011 about the unfortunate passing of the President of Ferrero Rocher in Cape Town still achieves daily readership, and was the second best read blogpost last year. The top ten list of blogposts with the highest readership in 2012 is as follows:
1. Winter 2012 Restaurant Specials warm up Cape Town and the Winelands
2 President of Ferrero Rocher company dies in Cape Town cycling accident
3 Table Mountain reaches New7Wonders of Nature climax, for the wrong reasons
4 Paulaner Bräuhaus closes down due to dispute with V&A Waterfront!
5 Value Car Hire Sweet Service and Beluga Sour Service Awards (a blogpost written in 2009, receiving renewed readership via a link to our blog, on the blog of Shaun Oakes, who wrote about being banned from the restaurant)
6. Spring/Summer Restaurant Specials: Cape Town and Winelands
7. Help predict MasterChef SA and win a whale of a weekend away!
8. Chef Reuben Riffel’s endorsement of Robertsons is a marketing con!
9. Restaurant Review: Gaaitjie in Paternoster one of West Coast’s best (even though this blogpost was written in 2010)
10. Was appointing Eat Out judge Bruce Palling a mis-steak?
We thank our loyal blog readers, and welcome new readers sent to our blog through controversies, the past week having seen the latest surge in readership, with close to 1500 unique pageviews in the past three days for the blogpost ‘New Year starts with Twitter bullying, bashing, and blackmail!‘. We would prefer to receive fewer unpublishable Comments on the blog, and more contributory input of benefit to our readers. We will publish all non-defamatory Comments.
We are grateful to be ranked 6th on the myScoop Blog Aggregator, and 7th on the Amatomu Blog Aggregator.

Last Sunday my eye caught a full page advertisement for Cape Town, in the Travel Weekly supplement of the Sunday Times. Its content, headline, media placement, and advertising frequency point to a marketing failure on behalf of the tourism industry of Cape Town.
At its AGM last year Cape Town Tourism announced with loud fanfare that its marketing would include a winter advertising campaign, in which its members could offer their specials, and that it was offering special packages via Thompsons Holidays. One would have expected the campaign to run throughout winter, as we are not even midway through winter, and it is exceptionally quiet so far, worse than the same months last year, which was deemed a ‘tourism crisis’. Utilising Ogilvy Cape Town, one of the country’s top advertising agencies, one would have thought that the agency would have found a creative way to design the advertisement.
The advertisement looks like a dog’s breakfast, which should have made the art director cringe, being individual special offer ads placed higgledy piggledy within a template of a headline and a footer with contact details. Even Lisa Clark, Ogilvy Cape Town Account Executive for Cape Town Tourism, admitted that the ad was ‘very busy’ - one wonders why she allowed her client to place such an ad, the agency being the custodian of its client’s brand image and reputation.
Our critique of the Cape Town Winter advertising campaign is the following:
1. The headline ‘Come and discover why Cape Town warms up in winter’ does not communicate that Cape Town is ‘warm’ due to its specials, and does not change the perception most Johannesburgers have about Cape Town, namely that it is wet and cold all winter long!
2. The footer refers to ‘weekend packages’ - it’s school holiday time now, so surely the Cape Town tourism industry would love to have tourists for longer than a weekend!
3. Ironically, with the pay-off line ‘You don’t need a holiday, you need Cape Town’, the ad is placed in the travel supplement of the Sunday Times, filled mainly with ads for international destinations, not a place locals would be likely to look for local destination ads.
4. The advertisers themselves appear to have little marketing understanding, some not having a website address and/or telephone number in their ads, for a call to action! Cape Town Tourism itself is not branded in the ad, even though its contact details are provided, so one would not know which company is co-ordinating the deals and taking bookings for them. Identity of the advertisers is also poor in most ads, the Table Mountain Cableway not being identifiable in its crass ad, trying to communicate far too much. The exception is the classy looking ad for the V&A Waterfront’s ‘Master of the Trade Routes Culinary Challenge‘ ad, but it does not communicate that there are excellent restaurant special offers. Its website address is almost unreadable, being so small.
5. Not all ads contain special offers, which is what the ad is meant to communicate
6. The frequency of three insertions only, this ad having been the final one of the three, is ineffective in making any impact on the target market.
Cape Town Tourism may just as well not have bothered to run this advertising campaign, it being so badly done from a creative, production, and media perspective, reflecting how weak the marketing calibre of Cape Town Tourism is. It reflects cutting marketing corners, cutting back on its marketing program which it shared with the industry earlier this year. The tourism body receives R42 million a year from the City of Cape Town to market our city!

Today we have reached an exciting milestone on our Whale Cottage Blog, in that this is our 1000th blogpost. We thank our readers for their support in reading our blog, and for providing feedback, to help us improve as we developed over the almost three years. In numerology, 1000 symbolises multitude and perfection, we have learnt from Google, and we dedicate our next 1000 blogposts to be worthy of this definition.
Highlights have been making the Top 10 on the Most Controversial Blog category of the 2010 SA Blog Awards, achieving a cumulative unique readership of just under half a million in the last 16 months (about 30000 per month on average), and setting up the Food & Wine Bloggers’ Club last year.
So what have we learnt about blogging and our blog in the close to three years:
* Restaurant news in general, and reviews and special offers specifically have attracted the greatest interest on this blog. Our most widely read restaurant reviews, since we went onto Google Analytics 16 months ago, are for Tokara DeliCATessen, Sotana by Caveau, Gaaitjie, Pierneef à La Motte, and Duchess on Wisbeach. It was the enjoyment of writing the review of Portofino restaurant, owned by Cormac Keane, that got us started with reviews, and we have written more than 100 reviews since then. We have seen negative reaction to some of these, and have been banned from the Caveau group of restaurants (including Sotano), the Caviar group of restaurants (Beluga and Sevruga), Opal Lounge, and Café des Arts as a result. Restaurants generally are poor at Social Media, and only a handful blog and/or are on Twitter. This means that a restaurant’s information most often is provided by a blog rather than by the restaurant’s own website, which can be to its advantage or diadvantage, depending on the reviews that are listed on the first page of Google. Other highly read blogposts are the Winter and Summer Restaurant Specials lists, the Table Mountain vote for the New7Wonders of the World, Prince Albert and Charlene Wittstock’s visit to Fresnaye in January 2009, and the Disney service training programme instituted just days before the World Cup.
* Tourism topics have also attracted attention, probably because there are far fewer writers on this topic.
* Word spreads quickly if a blogpost is controversial, and brings in new readers to the blog. Despite all allegations to the contrary, we have never written a blogpost to be controversial. It is the reaction to it by our readers that causes the controversy.
* Comments have become harder to manage, and increasingly cowardly commenters write anonymously to slate the writer of the blog or the subject of a blogpost. If one deletes such comments, one is criticised; if one publishes them, one is equally criticised!
* While blog readers enjoy honesty, and probably read this blog for it, those that are on the receiving end of it plus their friends do react with venom, rather than using the feedback to improve their service and quality. The nastiness in ‘unSocial Media’, our new name for it, has been shocking, especially in a campaign by David Cope on Twitter, where anything goes!
* Blogging has become very competitive, as bloggers chase readership, and want to be the first to review a new restaurant. Achieving a first page Google listing for a restaurant, for example, can attract readership over time to the blog by new users when they Google the name of a restaurant.
* Readership is disappointingly low on public holidays and weekends. Saturdays have the lowest blog reading numbers, dropping by up to half of weekday readership. Our highest readership of this blog was on 16 June 2010, during last year’s World Cup, when a tag for ‘2010′ was widely linked to this blog, attracting 9000 page views on that day alone.
* Although most readers are unknown to the writer, one carries a huge responsibility in shaping people’s opinions through what one writes. We try our best to remain objective in presenting information at all times. We have been blamed for wishing to destroy restaurants and new initiatives, yet supply news about restaurant openings and specials all the time. Attempts were made last year by Michael Olivier (Editor of Crush!), David Cope (The Foodie Blogger) and Skye Grove (Cape Town Tourism PR Manager) to have this blog closed down. We moved our blog hosting to America, to prevent this.
* Information as well as images are most likely to bring traffic via Google to the website, followed by Twitter. Facebook is far less likely to draw traffic.
* The weekly Sweet & Sour Service are enjoyed by readers, and many readers read the blog on a Friday, to check who has received the Sour Award, and then catch up in reading the blogposts of the pevious week. The Spar Sweet/Limelight Sour Service Awards attracted an unusually high readership, and still do.
Looking forward, we plan to continue being honest, no matter what the cost. We will endeavour to remain relevant, and to remain heard in the increasing Social Media ‘noise’, as more and more blogs are started, and existing ones reinvent themselves. We will try to write shorter blogposts! We will continue helping others to become better bloggers, and will endeavour to never stop learning from others too.
Thank you 1000 times for your readership and support!

Sun 5 Jun 2011
It would appear as if the world-wide recession has only hit South Africa, and the Cape in particular, now and with a severe bang. There is almost daily news of restaurant closures, three alone in the past three days, sad given how much the restaurants have invested in building a brand name and a regular following for their businesses.
The more than 100 restaurants in Cape Town and in the Winelands that are offering such generous Winter specials must be commended, and we will do our best to make their specials known to as many persons as possible. We encourage our readers to do the same, to prevent any further closures.

POSTSCRIPT 28/7: Pete Goffe-Wood, ex-owner of Wild Woods in Hout Bay, has written a frank article on Food24 about why he recently closed his restaurant. He blames Capetonians for not supporting restaurants in winter months, which means that they have to cover costs out of savings created in summer, to keep the business afloat in winter (this is a general Cape winter scenario for all businesses in the tourism industry - if one does not know about this, one should not be in the business in the first place!). He writes that Johannesburg restaurants do not suffer this seasonality. The recent 2-week summery spell proved what an important role the weather plays - business was booming for restaurants and accommodation as Capetonians left their homes, went out, and spent money, a welcome cash injection in these difficult times. The Bastille Festival in Franschhoek had record attendance during this period.
Restaurant Specials cause cost undercutting, which attracts business and provides cashflow, but does not help the industry, he writes. If specials weren’t offered, one probably would have seen a far greater number of restaurants closing down. They are hugely popular, and on this blog the Restaurant Specials listings are the most popular of all blogposts. He also blames restaurant owners, often chefs, for being too ‘emotional’ about their businesses, and for not seeing the signs of tough times early enough, which may call for closing one’s restaurant. Clearly opening any business at the moment is high risk, and for a hospitality business the risk is even higher. Goffe-Wood also lashes out at the recent Weekend Argus article about Restaurant Closures, using names from this blogpost. As much as he blames journalist Helen Bamford for getting her facts wrong, he does too, in calling her Linda! Describing a non-renewal of a restaurant lease as not being a restaurant closure or failure is very debatable - if things were going well, leases would have been renewed, especially for a restaurant like Haute Cabriere, where Chef Matthew Gordon had operated for 16 years!

Our Blog is two and half years old, and we have been dedicated to keeping up our initial goal of writing a blog post a day, with only a few exceptions. Blog writing is scary initially, as one does not know if anyone, and who, is reading the blog, until one reads comments from readers, if they reveal their real names.
Out of interest, we checked the more than 400000 unique pageviews of our blogposts for the past twelve months via Google Analytics, widely regarded as the most reliable benchmark of readership. Our Blogposts with the Winter, as well as the Spring and Summer Restaurant Specials, have attracted strong interest, with the remaining Top 10 most read blogposts being a mixed bag, containing four restaurant reviews, indicating that blog readers love reading about restaurants. We have just launched the Winter 2011 Restaurant Specials list.
The Whale Cottage Blog Top 10 blog post list in the past twelve months is the following:
1. Winter Restaurant Specials for winter 2010
2. Table Mountain a nominee for the New7Wonders of the World
3. Spring and Summer Restaurant Specials : 2010/2011
4. Prince Albert’s attendance at Charlene Wittstock’s birthday party in Fresnaye in January 2009 - the recent engagement and the forthcoming marriage of the couple keeps pulling traffic to the blog
5. Restaurant Review of Tokara DeliCATessen (a surprise, but probably due to potential search confusion between the Deli at Tokara, and the Tokara Restaurant. Ranked third on Google search for this deli).
6. Restaurant Review: Sotano by Caveau - this blogpost caused a stir, mainly due to the rude response it received on Twitter from one of the Caveau owners
7. Presentation by Disney before World Cup to frontline hospitality and tourism staff, to enhance service levels - it was a ‘Mickey Mouse’ presentation, of little value, and cost the taxpayer a fortune!
8. The Stellenbosch Restaurant Route - the popularity of this blogpost, listing the significant restaurants in Stellenbosch, is rewarding, as the Stellenbosch Restaurant Route is something I created on this blog, to honour Stellenbosch now wearing the Gourmet Capital crown.
9. Restaurant Review: Pierneef à La Motte - this is one of my favourite reviews, and was a pleasure to write from the generous background information I received from Hein Koegelenberg, and in reaction to the amazing food that I have enjoyed there. Experiencing it for the first time gave me goose bumps, knowing that this will become an Eat Out Top 10 Restaurant for 2011.
10. Restaurant Review: Gaaitjie Restaurant in Paternoster - our review is regularly read, ranked first on Google for this restaurant.
In the past month the Top 10 most read Blogposts were as follows:
1. President of Ferrero Rocher dies in cycling accident in Cape Town - this is not normally a story we would write, but we wanted to correct early headlines that stated that Pietro Ferrero was ‘killed in SA accident’, implying yet another crime statistic, which was completely incorrect.
2. The Consumer Protection Act, of vital importance to every South African business dealing with the consumer
3. Departure of Chef David Higgs from Rust en Vrede - probably due to the lack of a statement from Higgs as to why he is leaving and where he is going, this blogpost still attracts regular readership
4. Cape Town and Winelands Spring and Summer Restaurant Specials for summer 2010/2011
5. Cape Town to become a 24-hour world class city, detailing plans for various development hubs in Cape Town, including the expansion of the Cape Town International Convention Centre
6. Restaurant Review: Casparus Restaurant in Stellenbosch (right), an Eat Out Top 10 Restaurant prediction for 2012
7. Restaurant Review: Dear Me in Shortmarket Street
8. Tasting Room best restaurant in Africa/Middle East, reflecting the results of the S. Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants
9. Restaurant Review: Dash at the Queen Victoria Hotel, an Eat Out Top 10 Restaurant Award prediction for 2012
10. Hotels in Cape Town offer wide range of winter rates, but discriminate against foreigners.
Google Analytics also measures clicks on tags, and the top tags in the past month, which led Google searches to the Whale Cottage Blog, were ’Charlene Wittstock’ (very high source of traffic), ‘Prince William’, ‘Table Mountain’, ‘Marthinus van Schalkwyk’, ‘El Bulli’, ‘Cape of Good Hope’, ‘Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company; ’petrol price’, ‘SA Tourism’, and ‘Hemelhuijs Restaurant’.
We welcome your feedback about our blog, and the stories you would like to read more about. Thank you to all our readers for your readership, support, suggestions, and comments.
