Grande Provence introduces weekend High Tea

Grande Provence is one of my favourite wine estates to visit, the team of Restaurant Manager Donovan Dreyer and Chef Darren Roberts always having time for a chat, and are extremely generous.  Sitting outside under the trees in the courtyard, and receiving such friendly service, makes one forget about reality for a while.

Earlier this month Grande Provence introduced a High Tea served on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and is the first Franschhoek establishment to serve a High Tea.   It is a  wonderful treat, and inexpensive at R95 for two persons sharing.   I went to try it last Sunday, and was impressed with the selection offered, being salmon sandwiches, scones with home-made farm plum jam and whipped cream, fresh berries, chocolate mousse cake, and carrot muffins, all delicious treats.  A friend who came to chat, and who had been to the High Tea at the Mount Nelson Hotel recently, and who has also enjoyed High Tea in London where she lives, suggested that a High Tea should contain more savoury items.    The scones are freshly baked, and therefore a waiting time of 20 minutes is requested.   One can also order the scones separately, at R 40, or the chocolate mousse cake, at R30 each.

In addition to the tea time treats, Grande Provence is now offering Revolution Teas, at R16, and flavours include Golden Chamomile Herbal, Bombay Chai, Dragon Eye Oolong, White Pear, Earl Grey Lavender and Tropical Green.  Iced Teas are also available at R25, and contain the daily required Vitamin C value, in blueberry, pomegranate, mango and pink grapefruit flavours, perfect for a hot Franschhoek day.   Grande Provence serves a super foamy cappuccino too, at R18.

POSTSCRIPT 12/8:  Grande Provence has advised that it is no longer offering its High Tea.

  1. I am enquiring with regard to a ‘kitchen’ tea for 15 people on Wednesday 13th March and would like to have some detail as to location for such event at your property as well as a suggested menu and cost.

    Thank you

  2. Dear June

Please could you contact Grande Provence directly? Tel (021) 876-8600.

    Chris
