Condé Nast Traveler has ranked Cape Town as the third Best Food City in the World in its Readers’ Choice Awards 2014.  It follows hot on the heels of Spanish San Sebastián and Paris, and beat Florence, Rome, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Barcelona, Quebec, Sydney, Vancouver, Montreal, Lyon, Bologna, Kyoto, Vienna, Budapest, Madrid, and Melbourne.

Cape Town was lauded as a food destination as follows:‘In Cape Town, ‘local’ rules. The Mother city is smallish, casual but supremely stylish, and welcoming—words that describe its artisanal foods and restaurant scenes as much as its citizens’.   Reference was made to Chef Luke Dale-Roberts of The Test Kitchen, whose restaurant was ranked in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2014, the only restaurant in our country to make this list at number 48: ‘Sure, there are flashy, world-renowned addresses [in Cape Town], like Luke Dale-Roberts’ Test Kitchen (photograph above) and Pot Luck Club. (Both are housed in the Old Biscuit Mill, which also hosts the Saturdays-only Neighbourgoods Market, an alfresco fair of the small-batch and hand-crafted, from sheep’s milk cheeses to artisanal honeys to beers and wines, biltong and oysters.)’.

Other Cape Town restaurants highlighted are Baked (in ‘Bakhoven‘ – sic), The Roundhouse, Bistrot Bizerca, and Bistro Sixteen82, a rather has-been (2014) collection of restaurants!

It’s a shame that the Condé Nast Traveler did not recognise the exciting food developments on Bree Street, including Chef’s Warehouse & Canteen, which has received many accolades and much media coverage!  Interesting is that Copenhagen is not on the list, being the home to the world’s best restaurant Noma.
